Club Med Ixtapa

We just came back from a trip to Club Med in Ixtapa. The food at Club Med was good as was the house wine. We found that there are premium liquors and wines for an extra cost. For us wine is like condiment for the food, so every night we tried a different wine with our dinner. There was an interesting selection in the wine list. There are three restaurants at the resort. Two of them have specialties; one is a steak restaurant where we had a 2006 Château Mondorion, heavy cassis, blackberries, roses, and coffee grounds on the finish. Light acids, tannins it was perfect for the steaks that we ate. The second restaurant is international food where we had a deconstructed steak Cesar salad; I paired the dish with a 2005 Chateau Cantenac Brown Margaux, which had Complex and enticing nose of blackberries, concentrated cherries, cassis, meat drippings, and chocolate. It had a long finish. The main restaurant is a buffet style which has different food theme each night. My favorite dinners here were the Mexican night; there were dozen traditional Mexican dishes from appetizers to desserts and of course hand-made tortillas. As a wine we had a 2009 Orballo Albariño Rías Baixas, the flavors of grapefruit, lemon zest, and minerals, plus the acidity from the wine was a good pairing with the different dishes that we tried that night. Our last night at the club was a Gala Night, the food at the restaurant was outstanding, there were French specialties like foie grass escargots, and so on. We had a 2008 Louis Latour Beaujolais-Villages. This light crispy wine with flavors of strawberry and berries was a good complement to all the dishes that we tried that night..
